I Wish to Have a Puppy

Xiang-Tin, 7, always does her hair with pretty headbands that go with her pink dress and shoes, and she loves going to school to play with her classmates. She gets along great with her classmates, who love being around her, and is often the top student in her school. At the age of 2, Xiang-Tin lost the ability to walk, and needed the help of a wheelchair to get around, but the sweet smile on her face and her amiable personality never faltered. She remains as cute and sincere as ever.

In the process of getting to know Xiang-Tin, volunteers from Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Taiwan noticed how much she liked playing with dogs. Every time she visited her grandpa’s house in the mountains, she would call out the dog’s name, pet its fur and hug it while enjoying a nice afternoon. She constantly begged her mom to let their relatives’ dogs stay at her house for a few days, and rushed home from school to play with them. Because of Xiang-Tin’s condition, her mother worried that an allergic reaction would worsen the situation, and so would not allow her to own a dog. However, Xiang-Tin never stopped dreaming of a toy poodle to call her own.

When Make-A-Wish® found out about Xiang-Tin’s biggest wish, they sought the help of the doctor, and immediately put Xiang-Tin through an allergy test. Much to her family’s relief, they found out that she was not allergic to dogs. Volunteers set off to find a healthy, yet suitable toy poodle for Xiang-Tin, and with some help it looked like her dream was soon to come true.

On the long-awaited wish day, a warm-hearted volunteer provided a museum as the setting, along with food for everyone attending. Xiang-Tin performed on her recorder and sang, and the audience cheered. When Xiang-Tin’s dream toy poodle was brought out, a giant smile appeared on her face and she reached out to hug the dog. The puppy gently laid its head on her arm, as if the two of them already knew each other. Today, Xiang-Tin is full of smiles and confidence as she finally has the dog she’s always wanted.
