World Heart Day, celebrated each year on September 29, highlights the importance of heart health—and the role joy and positivity can play in overall well-being.

For children living with critical illnesses, including heart conditions, everyday experiences like play, exploration, and connection can be deeply meaningful. A wish offers a life-changing experience that brings strength, confidence, and a renewed sense of possibility.

Whether it’s spending time in nature, meeting someone special, or trying something new, a wish helps children focus on what they can do—not what they are facing.

What Is World Heart Day?

Created by the World Heart Federation, World Heart Day unites people worldwide to inspire healthier choices and raise awareness about heart health.

Celebrated in more than 100 countries, the campaign highlights how everyday choices can support heart health and strengthen communities. At Make-A-Wish®, we see how a wish can complement this journey—helping children rediscover joy, build emotional resilience, and look forward with hope.

Cardiovascular diseases: The facts

Cardiovascular disease is the world’s leading cause of death, taking nearly 20.5 million lives each year. That is about one-third of all global deaths (World Heart Federation, 2023). Over 75% of these deaths happen in low- and middle-income countries, and many are preventable through healthier habits.

Key risk factors include high blood pressure, unhealthy diets and physical inactivity (World Health Organization, 2023). Raising awareness helps families and communities make informed choices that support long-term heart health.

Supporting Heart Health Through Everyday Choices

Healthy habits can play an important role in supporting heart health from an early age. Balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and access to medical care all contribute to stronger, healthier lives.

For children living with critical illnesses, maintaining a sense of normalcy and joy is equally important. A wish experience supports emotional well-being, helping children feel stronger and more confident as they navigate their journey.

Heart Health in Low-Resource Settings

In many parts of the world, access to quality healthcare, early diagnosis, and treatment for heart conditions remains limited. These challenges can affect a child’s ability to receive the care they need.

At Make-A-Wish, we believe every child deserves to experience hope and joy, regardless of where they live. A wish brings light during difficult times and helps children feel seen, strengthened, and supported.

How Communities Can Make a Difference

On World Heart Day, organizations, governments, and communities come together to promote heart health through education, awareness, and access to care.

Creating environments where children can play, move, and thrive supports both physical and emotional well-being. These collective efforts help children build healthier futures.

Your Role in Supporting Children

Caring for heart health goes beyond one day. Small, everyday actions—such as encouraging movement, supporting balanced diets, and prioritizing medical care—can make a lasting difference.

You can also take action by becoming a WishMaker. When you help grant a wish, you create a life-changing experience with lasting impact—one that supports emotional strength and helps children look ahead with renewed hope.
