I wish to be a pilot
Sarunya, 12, Sri Lanka
Twelve-year-old Sarunya is a bright, outgoing girl whose warmth and determination shine through in everything she does. Despite living with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (B-ALL), she continues to embrace life with remarkable positivity, filling her days with the things she loves most: singing, playing football, spending time with her family and best friend, and working hard at school to achieve her dreams.
Among those dreams is a fascination with aviation.
When asked about her greatest wish, Sarunya shared that she wants to be a pilot.
So, for her wish, Sarunya stepped into the exciting world of flying and experienced what it is like to be a pilot. She explored an aircraft cockpit, sat in the pilot’s seat and got to imagine seeing the world from above. As she looked around the cockpit, she learned about the instruments and controls, how an aircraft operates and gained a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world she has always been fascinated by.
A highlight of the experience was meeting a real pilot. Sarunya eagerly asked questions, listened to stories from the pilot’s career and learned more about the skills and training required to fly an aircraft. She loved hearing first-hand about life in aviation and what it takes to turn a childhood dream into a future profession.
For a young girl who dreams of one day soaring through the skies herself, the experience brought her ambition to life. But more than anything, the wish gave Sarunya the chance to step away from the challenges of treatment and focus on something that filled her with excitement and possibility.
Sharing the experience with her family made the day even more special, creating precious memories that they will treasure for years to come.
