I wish to be a vet
Mia, 7, Peru
Just seven years old, but full of confidence, curiosity and imagination. Mia is a little girl who adores animals, especially parrots and dragons, and dreams of exciting adventures in faraway places. If she could choose any superpower, she would fly. Explore the world from above. But just one year ago, Mía’s world was suddenly disrupted when she began experiencing troubling symptoms. After undergoing a series of medical tests, she was diagnosed with cerebral sarcoma.
The diagnosis was devastating for both Mía and her mother. Since then, Mía has faced chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, navigating challenges that no child should have to endure. The journey has brought moments of uncertainty and sadness, but together they kept hope and, throughout it all, Mía’s love for animals never faded.
So, when asked about her greatest wish, Mía didn’t hesitate. “My wish is to be a veterinarian for a day because I love animals.”Knowing how meaningful this dream was, the Make-A-Wish Peru team set out to create an experience that would be even more special than Mía imagined. During the weeks leading up to her wish, she received a talking toy parrot and other surprises to build excitement for the adventure ahead. The gifts delighted her, but the real magic was still to come.
The first adventure took her to a wetland, accompanied by an expert in birds. Wearing a princess crown and an enormous smile, Mía eagerly learned about the many bird species that call the wetlands home. She listened intently as the expert explained the ecosystem around her and then boarded a boat to see the birds up close using birdwatching equipment. The day ended with lunch alongside her mother and the expert, where she was gifted a second toy parrot. Mía immediately began playing with both parrots, laughing as they repeated each other’s sounds back and forth.
Next, began her veterinary journey.Mía was surprised with her very own veterinarian’s coat and a toy medical kit. Excitedly pulling on the coat and filling its pockets with instruments, she looked ready to start work straight away. What she didn’t yet know was that the club was home to a small zoo filled with animals she would soon help care for. A veterinarian welcomed Mía into the animal clinic and introduced her to a hen and a rooster. She learned how to weigh them and administer their medication, carefully following instructions. Although she was initially a little nervous, her confidence quickly grew. Before long, she was gently holding the hen in her arms, looking every bit the dedicated young veterinarian she had dreamed of becoming. The surprises continued throughout the day. Mía met a variety of animals, explored the zoo and even enjoyed a horse ride, supported by staff who ensured her safety. Every moment was filled with excitement, discovery and joy, creating memories that she and her family will treasure for years to come. The experience concluded with a shared lunch and more special gifts, including animal books from the bird expert, a teddy bear and a giant panda plush. Overwhelmed with happiness, Mía thanked everyone who had helped bring her wish to life.
For Mía’s mother, the wish also created lifelong memories. “It’s so lovely to see her playing with her veterinarian’s coat and medical instruments, pretending to care for the toy animals she received during her time as a veterinarian. We know many more days of joy and imagination lie ahead for her. Thank you for allowing us to be part of this unforgettable experience.”
