I wish to have a special bike

Paolo, 11, Italy

Sturge Weber syndrome
A smiling boy in a wheelchair is surrounded by friends outdoors. One friend has an arm around his shoulders, and others stand nearby, all appearing happy and engaged with each other.

Paolo and his family are an inspiring example of life. They have managed to conquer a normalcy full of love and hope, despite the complexities of their daily lives. Some time ago, Laura, Paolo’s mom, contacted us looking for support in dealing with the challenges their family experiences every day. She firmly believed that making a wish come true could be a precious gift to offer Paolo the serenity that every child deserves.

When we met them, we realized how important it was for them to experience carefree moments outdoors.

For Paolo, a child full of energy and desire to explore, a special bike would be the means to express his vitality, would give him that set of emotions and sensations that we can sum up in one word: happiness.

And so it was. On the day Paolo’s wish became a reality, the Church Square was transformed into a place of celebration. Thanks to the support of the entire community around him, the atmosphere was magical: the bell tower rang, colorful flags fluttered, and the cheers of his friends resounded in the air. Paolo, with the biggest smile ever, arrived with his mom riding his new bike. Every child present wanted to celebrate with him and surround him with affection. Paolo rode nonstop, inviting friends to ride on his bike.

At that moment, he was not just in child riding a bike. He was a symbol of what can be achieved with love, solidarity and sharing. The realization of his wish, thanks to Make-A-Wish and its supporters, gave Paolo, but also his family and all the people who were present, endless joy.

These were precious moments to keep finding the strength to look forward and reach new goals.
