World Cancer Day, held every February 4, unites millions to raise awareness of cancer’s global impact. This global initiative by the Union for International Cancer Control shows that cancer can impact anyone, no matter their age, background or circumstances.

World Cancer Day 2025 focused on the theme ‘United by Unique,’ reminding us that even as we fight cancer together, every experience is deeply personal. This message resonates deeply with Make-A-Wish, where we understand that behind every diagnosis of a child living with a critical illness lies a unique story filled with hopes, and the unbreakable human spirit that deserves to be celebrated and nurtured.

Understanding World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day was launched on February 4, 2000, during the World Summit Against Cancer in Paris. The Paris Charter, signed at the summit, set three goals: advance cancer research, improve patient care, and raise global awareness. Today, the initiative is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), uniting over 1,100 organizations in more than 170 countries. It’s the world’s leading movement to reduce the impact of cancer.

This spirit of global unity and hope aligns with Make-A-Wish, where every child’s story matters. Every wish is a powerful reminder of resilience.

Global statistics on cancer

Cancer is still a leading global health challenge, with nearly 20 million new cases and 10 million deaths in 2022, according to the World Health Organization. That number could rise to 35 million cases per year by 2050. The increase is driven by an aging population and preventable risk factors like tobacco use, unhealthy diets, and air pollution.

The most common cancers globally are lung-, breast-, and colorectal cancer. Worryingly, more and more people under 50 are being diagnosed. This is a trend linked to shifts in lifestyle and environment.

Access to care still varies widely. In low-resource settings, many children and families face barriers to early detection and treatment. And yet, medical progress is real: advances in immunotherapy and personalized medicine are offering new hope.

We believe that every child facing a critical illness like cancer, deserves more than treatment. They deserve hope, joy, and moments of strength that carry them through. Behind every statistic is a story that matters.

Importance of early detection

Many types of cancer can be treated more effectively, or even prevented, when detected early. That’s why awareness, education, and access to screening are so important. Early diagnosis can improve survival rates and reduce the emotional and physical toll on families. Prevention also plays a key role, with lifestyle changes and regular health checks helping to reduce known risks. For children with a critical illness like cancer, early detection can lead to more treatment choices and more time to focus on healing and hope.

Support systems for patients

Behind every wish granted by Make-A-Wish, stands a powerful circle of support. Families offer comfort, strength, and love. Their presence is the foundation of each child’s journey. Medical teams support children through every step. They help shape wishes that bring comfort and joy.

Communities play a vital role too, stepping up to make wishes possible and showing each child that they’re not alone. Together, these connections create more than just a joyful moment. They build lasting memories and help children see what’s possible beyond illness.

Make-A-Wish and cancer support

Make-A-Wish supports children facing cancer around the world each year, offering them more than just a moment of joy. A wish creates space for hope at a time filled with hospital visits, treatments, and uncertainty. Each wish reflects the child’s journey. It could be meeting a hero, visiting a special place, or creating something meaningful.

Make-A-Wish works closely with healthcare teams to ensure the experience is safe, timely, and truly impactful. This reminds every child with cancer that they are more than their diagnosis, and that their life goals matter.

How to raise awareness

There are many meaningful ways to help Make-A-Wish bring hope to children with cancer. As an ally, you can donate, start a fundraise event, or volunteer your time to support wish experiences. Businesses can become corporate partners, sponsor specific wishes, or match employee donations. Every act, big or small, helps create life-changing moments for children facing cancer, turning fear into strength and uncertainty into hope.

Inspirational stories of hope

Children facing cancer often endure immense challenges, but Make-A-Wish brings hope and joy into their lives. Six-year-old Jen from New Zealand, diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, wished to fly in a helicopter. Soaring over her city gave her strength and freedom during treatment.

João from Brazil, living with cancer, wished of being a cowboy. His wish day on a farm, riding horses and herding sheep, brought him peace and happiness. These moments remind us: a single wish can create lifelong memories. Help bring more life‑changing wishes to children. Support Make-A-Wish today.
