I wish to be a mermaid

Ying Xuan, 8, Taiwan

neuroblastoma
A young girl dressed as a mermaid sits in a paddling pool filled with colourful plastic balls, smiling, surrounded by six adults making peace signs and posing happily—celebrating Loraine's wish to meet Stray Kids in a joyful indoor gathering.

When Ying Xuan was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2021, her carefree childhood was suddenly replaced with hospital visits, treatments, and discomfort. What should have been years filled with laughter and play turned into a fight for her health.

Through it all, Ying Xuan held onto a beautiful wish: to become a mermaid. She imagined herself with a shimmering tail, splashing happily in the water alongside her parents. But her illness made swimming difficult; her ears couldn’t get wet, and she has an artificial eye, which meant she couldn’t enjoy the water like other children.

To make her wish come true safely, we created a magical experience in an inflatable pool, a clean and controlled space where her mermaid dream could come to life.

At first, Ying Xuan was shy, hiding behind her mother as she faced a room full of unfamiliar faces. But soon, laughter filled the air. Games and fun challenges helped her open up, and before long, she was smiling, playing in the pool, and striking joyful poses for photos.

The moment she slipped into her mermaid costume, Ying Xuan transformed. Her innocent smile radiated pure happiness as she splashed in the water, posed like a fairytale mermaid, and played with floating balls as if she had truly entered her own magical underwater world.

We hope that Ying Xuan, who made this enchanting wish, will carry the same courage she’s shown in her fight against illness, and the bright smile she wore when her wish came true, as she continues to explore the world and embrace all its beauty.
