I Wish to Be a Scientist

Elias picture rare disease

Despite living with a rare genetic disorder called Loeys-Dietz syndrome, 10-year old Elias from Italy always saw life as being full of possiblity, with his cheerful enthusiasm, zest for life and great appetite for learning evident to all who knew him.

The first time we met him, despite the fact that he was coming out of two years of hospitalization, he was excited, looking forward to being able tell us his wish: to be a scientist for a day. Elias talked passionately with our volunteers about Einstein, science, research, and the origins of the universe. Elias described his wish vividly and with great enthusiasm. He imagined being joined by a real scientist with all the necessary materials to do experiments together.

And so, Elias’ Wish Journey, began. Elias received video calls from experts in the field of science who would engage him in quizzes and experiments. Each call was an adventure, a discovery; Elias could ask questions, get advice, and satisfy his curiosity. And then finally the day of his wish arrived.

Everything was organized with Elias’ situation in mind, including transport by a medicated ambulance to an educational and experimental archaeology center, Alkemy, that organizes programs and workshops focused on history and science.

Elias arrived full of chat and excitement and ready to start his adventure as a scientist. He was overwhelmed when he saw so many people waiting just to greet him.

Elias met scientists Diego and Virginia and donned the white coat, just like a real scientist. Then, with his little sister by his side, he conducted chemical and biological experiments, observing special reactions and phenomena, and participating in archaeological labs.

Elias surrounded by volunteers

At the end of the day, Elias’ smile was brighter than any experiment. The wish exceeded what Elias thought was possible, with thanks to the community of people who made it possible including donors, volunteers and the team at Alkemy, for whom Elias’ wish was a moment of pride and inspiration. We are so grateful to everyone who made it possible for Elias to enjoy this experience, together with his beautiful family.

We were very saddened to hear that Elias passed away in 2025. We hope that the memories of this special experience and the joy it brought to their little boy will provide some comfort to his family in their grief.

Wishes are proven to bring respite, broadened horizons and positive emotions to children like Elias and their families. Please consider making a donation today to help more children experience the power of a wish come true.
