I Wish to Fly Like A Bird

Ian's wish to fly like a bird

11-year-old Ian from Argentina is a sweet, caring and calm boy living with a brain tumor. Despite his young age, life has given him countless ‘no’s. He has gone through moments that seem eternal, full of suffering, pain, and anguish, where his smile not been seen for a long time. But he hasn’t forgotten how to smile, nor has he forgotten that he is a child. He still believes that somewhere there are smiles, games, friends, and magic, and he’s willing to keep looking and waiting for them.

Most of the time, he is accompanied in his treatement by his devoted father. Ian’s mother was hospitalized for seven months following a stroke, which she suffered the day they were told that the tumor in Ian’s little head had grown and was no longer responding to treatment. She continues to undergo rehabilitation.

Ian misses his mother dearly, but his armor has grown strong, accustomed to how hard life has been for him. He is battling an illness that gives him no respite, advancing rapidly, and about which little is said, perhaps to avoid facing what seems inevitable.

Ian’s wish was, “to fly and feel free; to see everything from above, to fly like a bird—that is my greatest wish!’ Experiencing his wish allowed Ian to feel like a child again, to laugh, smile and treasure the happy memory that will help him face whatever the future may hold.
